This unstuffed cabbage roll recipe is so tasty, nutritious and budget-friendly! It is also very versitile in that you can change it up easily to suit your taste. Want a soup? Add more water. Want it more as a side dish? Add rice! You can choose to use beef, pork or turkey. I used much more cabbage and water than this original recipe and it still turned out delicious! I also added a little more minced garlic. I hope you enjoy!

Ingredients For unstuffed cabbage roll

  • 1-2 lb
    lean ground beef or turkey
  • 1 Tbsp
    oil
  • 1
    large onion, chopped
  • 1 clove
    garlic, minced
  • 1
    med head cabbage
  • 2 can
    diced tomatoes, 14.5 oz ea
  • 1 can
    tomato sauce, 8 oz
  • 1.2 - 1 c
    water
  • 1 tsp
    sea salt
  • 1 tsp
    ground black pepper
  • 1 c
    uncooked rice, optional

How To Make unstuffed cabbage roll

    Heat the oil in a large skillet or dutch oven on medium heat. Saute the onions util tender and then add the ground beef or turkey and cook until the meat is browned.

    Add the minced garlic and cook an additional minute before adding the remaining ingredients. (If you want it less soupy, add the cup of uncooked rice, it will absorb the extra water). Cover, reduce the heat and simer about 25 minutes, or until the cabbage is fork-tender.
