These originated in Maine in 1902 at Amato's. They're now franchised throughout New England. I worked for Amato's for about 5 years and made plenty of them. Many people, fresh from the jetport, make it their first stop to get one when returning to Maine. You must use the exact ingredients or it won't come out right, although you can substitute the ham for genoa salami. Around here, we just call them Italians.

Ingredients

  • 1 - long soft sub roll
  • 3 slices white american cheese
  • 2 slices boiled ham
  • 1 - handful, chopped yellow onion
  • 6 slices sour pickle spears
  • 1 - tomato, sliced
  • 4 slices green pepper
  • 2 - greek olives, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil

How To Make the original italian sandwich

  • Step 1
    Slice the roll, and add the ingredients in the order listed. Mix the oils together and sprinkle over the sandwich. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve at room temperature.
