My husband is a very picky eater. He really liked the gyros, and he especially liked the tzadziki sauce. Don't be afraid to make extra sauce. It is great as a dip for vegetables. I made this with beef, but I want to make sure to use lamb next time.

If you are a vegetarian, try topping your pita with a variety of vegetables (lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, zucchini, onions, etc) and top with tzadziki sauce.

Ingredients

  • 6 medium
    whole wheat pitas
  • 1 small
    zucchini
  • 1 lb
    ground beef or lamb
  • 1/4 c
    crumbled feta
  • 2 Tbsp
    fresh mint, chopped
  • 2
    spring onions
  • 1 tsp
    minced garlic
  • ·
    salt and peppeer to taste
  • TZADZIKI SAUCE

  • 7-8 oz
    greek yogurt
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp
    fresh mint, chopped
  • 1 medium
    lemon, juiced
  • 1/2 tsp
    minced garlic
  • ·
    salt and pepper, to taste
  • ADD ONS:

  • ·
    lettuce leaves
  • ·
    tomato
  • ·
    onion, thin slices

How to Make My Gyro

Step-by-Step

  1. Heat broiler
  2. Process zucchini to medium grated consistency. Put into mixing bowl
  3. Add ground beef (or lamb) to zucchini. Mix well.
  4. Add Feta, mint, onion, and garlic. Stir into meat mixture. Salt and Pepper to taste.
  5. Shape into average sized meatballs. You will yield about 16 meatballs (about 4 per pita)
  6. Broil to medium-well. (no pink). about 10 minutes.
  7. For sauce, blend together yogurt, mint, lemon juice, and garlic. Salt and Pepper to taste.
  8. Warm pitas (wrap in foil and heat in oven, or quick heat in microwave 20 seconds each).
  9. Assemble, start with desired vegetables (lettuce, tomato, onion), top with 3-4 meatballs, desired amount of sauce, and feta.
