I made this soup on the fly with existing ingredients from my kitchen. It turned out to be a hearty feel good soup that everyone liked. The beer and the sugar created a great sweet and tart recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sliced red onions
  • 1/4 cup sliced red/yellow bell peppers
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 - head of green cabbage
  • 4 tablespoons chopped green kale
  • 1 teaspoon seasoned salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 stalks diced celery
  • 12 ounces sam adams winter ale beer
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 Medium - ham hocks or 4 meaty neck bones
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 teaspoons light brown sugar

How To Make onion cabbage brew soup

  • Step 1
    In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine 1st 8 ingredients & cover.
  • Step 2
    Simmer & stir frequently until all is softened.
  • Step 3
    Meanwhile, place the remaining ingredients , except brown sugar, in a stock pot and cook on low.
  • Step 4
    Combine saucepan ingredients into stock pot. Continue to cook on low, covered, for 1 hr.
  • Step 5
    Add the brown sugar, stir and cook for another 15 minutes.
  • Step 6
    Serve with cornbread or Texas Toast.
