I made this soup on the fly with existing ingredients from my kitchen. It turned out to be a hearty feel good soup that everyone liked. The beer and the sugar created a great sweet and tart recipe.

Ingredients

1/2 c
sliced red onions
1/4 c
sliced red/yellow bell peppers
2 Tbsp
butter
1/2
head of green cabbage
4 Tbsp
chopped green kale
1 tsp
seasoned salt
1 tsp
black pepper
2 stalk(s)
diced celery
12 oz
sam adams winter ale beer
2 c
beef broth
2 Medium
ham hocks or 4 meaty neck bones
2 tsp
garlic powder
1 c
water
4 tsp
light brown sugar

How to Make Onion Cabbage Brew Soup

Step-by-Step

  • 1In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine 1st 8 ingredients & cover.
  • 2Simmer & stir frequently until all is softened.
  • 3Meanwhile, place the remaining ingredients , except brown sugar, in a stock pot and cook on low.
  • 4Combine saucepan ingredients into stock pot. Continue to cook on low, covered, for 1 hr.
  • 5Add the brown sugar, stir and cook for another 15 minutes.
  • 6Serve with cornbread or Texas Toast.
