How To Make lucygirls dogfood #1
-
Step 1Step 1 The Base 1 lb. ground lamb or *ground beef 1 ½ c. uncooked brown rice 1½ c. uncooked barley (Hulled barley needs pre-soaking, pearled barley doesn’t.) 1½ T. apple cider vinegar >> I like BRAGGS 1 T. butter 1 small, round beef marrow bone, about the size of a golf ball. If not available, no biggie 6 c. water Combine everything from Step 1, mashing the meat up well. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer for 50 minutes. When done, remove the marrow bone and scoop out any marrow still left and stir it back into the base. Throw out the leftover bare bone since a cooked bone can splinter. While this mixture is simmering, also bring to boil and simmer on low in a small pot: 1c. uncooked split peas or lentils 2 c. water These will soften better if cooked separately like this, rather than in the main base. Remove main mixture from heat. Mash up the softened split peas/lentils and add to base.

Step 2Step 2 Add the following to the hot mixture in this order. Stir well after each addition. Orange vegetable: 1½ c. grated carrots, *sweet potato, or *winter squash (Use a food processor if you have one. ) Green vegetable: 1¾ c. grated broccoli or *cabbage (Use food processor) 1 8-oz. can red salmon (The whole thing: meat, skin, juice, bones, etc.) 1½ T. bone meal (Use human grade food supplement.) Lucy likes a small grated *apple or *peach, once in a while. Let it cool.

Step 3It is important not to cook these last two ingredients into the food, but to add these two ingredients to your dog’s food at each meal: ½ t. flax seed oil ½ t. nutritional yeast Flax seed oil is not stable enough to use in any hot or warm food.
