old easy recipe ..kids LOVE it! Should add that I got this YEARS ago from the cook at a little place north of Chattanooga called the Country store. The original cracker barrel. I didn't know until a couple years ago when we were up that way and I got off on the exit and the country store was no more. I wanted to take my kids to the place we went when I was a kid A local laughed "yup they closed a few years back ya know when cracker barrel really took off ..ya didnt know'" hahathat I felt dumb. I just know we would stop in every trip to Kentucky from 1972 - 1984 .. 4 times a year at lea

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 2 tablespoons frozen butter grated
  • 1 cup buttermilk ( you can sub homogenized milk )
  • 2 quarts chicken broth
  • 3 cups cooked chicken cut up
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 - bay leaf
  • 2 - chicken bouillon cubes

How To Make chicken n dumplings

  • Step 1
cook chicken ( I use 2 good sized breasts boiled in 2 quarts of water with garlic, onion powder and 1 bay leaf and 2 chicken bullion cubes ..this makes the broth needed.. add more water to it after cooking chicken and removing it to make 2 quarts)
  • Step 2
In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Cut the butter into the dry ingredients
  • Step 3
Stir in the milk, mixing with a fork until the dough forms a ball.
  • Step 4
Heavily flour a work surface. Roll the dough out thin with a heavily floured rolling pin. cut into 2 x 2 squares ( they do not have to be perfect squares)
  • Step 5
put square dumplings on a heavily floured plate. Just keep flouring between the layers of dumplings.
  • Step 6
bring the broth to a boil. Drop the dumplings in one at a time, stirring while you add them. The extra flour (about 3-4 Tablespoons) on them will help thicken the broth. Cook them for about 15-20 minutes or until they not doughy tasting
  • Step 7
Add the cooked chicken to the pot and you’re done! ENJOY!
