My mom made this dish when my family came to visit on several occasions. It was always a big hit and was one of our favorite meals. We always requested this meal when we came to visit.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds pork or chicken cut in 1
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/3 cup vinegar
  • 1 can 16 oz pineapple chunks, drained, reserve 1/2 cup liquid
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 - green pepper, cut into 1/2
  • 1 - green onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 can 8 oz water chestnuts, drained and sliced
  • 2 - tomatoes, cut each tomato in half and then into sixths

How To Make hawaiian pork (or chicken)

  • Step 1
    Add pork or chicken to heated oil in skillet. Brown the meat and then add the water. Cover and simmer for 40 minutes. Check for sticking in pan. Drain off fat.
  • Step 2
    Combine sugar and cornstarch in bowl. Add vinegar, pineapple liquid, soy sauce and salt. Blend well.
  • Step 3
    Add mixture to meat, reduce heat and simmer, stirring until smooth and thickened for about 5 minutes.
  • Step 4
    Add green pepper, onion, pineapple chunks, water chestnuts and tomatoes. Cook for 3 minutes.
  • Step 5
    Serve with rice.
  • Step 6
    Use your own judgment about number of minutes to cook after adding the various ingredients.
