This has been Grandma Linda's go-to recipe every year for our family Valentine's Day dinner, and is always a crowd-pleaser! We have been making it for our own families to enjoy it more than once a year. Even the pickiest of kids gobble up sweet and sour chicken.

Ingredients

  • 4 pounds chicken breasts, boneless and skinless
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 2 tablespoons garlic, freshly minced
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
  • 2 cups white vinegar
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 (8 oz.) can pineapple juice
  • 1 (15 oz.) can tomato sauce
  • cornstarch slurry, for thickening

How To Make grandma linda's sweet and sour chicken

  • Step 1
    Combine flour and cornstarch with seasonings. Dredge chicken first in beaten egg, then in flour/cornstarch mixture. Fry until golden brown. Then place in casserole dish.
  • Step 2
    Combine other ingredients in small saucepan and simmer over low heat, until sugar has dissolved. Once dissolved, whisk in cornstarch slurry to thicken sauce.
  • Step 3
    After slurry has been stirred in, carefully pour sauce mixture over the flour/cornstarch coated chicken breasts. Cover with foil.
  • Step 4
    Bake in 350 degree oven for 45 minutes, or a little more if needed.
  • Step 5
    Serve chicken over hot rice.
