I was in the mood for some pasta and I had ingredients on hand for tomato sauce. My husband will eat anything with ground beef and pasta so I made this casserole with him in mind. I have to say it was pretty good and serves a lot of people. I think I will make if for the next friends or family gathering at my home. As I think baking it the 2nd day might be even better.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 pound ground pork sausage
  • 1/2 - yellow onion, chopped well
  • 1/4 cup olive oil, extra virgin
  • 28 ounces diced tomatoes with seasonings
  • 2 cans 6 oz each, tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons dry basil
  • 2 tablespoons dry parsley
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 package large elbow macaroni, 12 oz. cooked al dente
  • 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

How To Make mama mia pasta casserole

  • Step 1
    In a large sauce pan brown ground beef, sausage, basil, parsley, garlic, salt, pepper and onions until light brown.
  • Step 2
    Add cans of diced tomatoes, 2 cans of tomato paste and 1 cup of water. Bring to a boil and lower to a simmer. Cook on low heat for 20 minutes, stirring often.
  • Step 3
    In a separate pot bring elbow macaroni to a boil and cook on medium high heat until done, about 8 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  • Step 4
    In a large casserole baking dish layer meat sauce, grated cheese and noodles. Repeat ending with sauce and topping with Mozzarella cheese.
  • Step 5
    Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees until cheese is melted, about 20 minutes.
