My kids didn't like tomato based stews. I ran across this recipe from an old A-1 recipe booklet that I modified. Even my picky husband liked this one.

  • 1-1/2 lb
    beef stew meat
  • 2 Tbsp
    vegetable oil
  • 3
    bouillon cubes, dissolved in 3 cups boiling water
  • 3 Tbsp
    a-1 steak sauce
  • 1-1/2 Tbsp
    worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp
    thyme, dried
  • 1/2 tsp
  • 1 tsp
  • 1
    bay leaf
  • 4
    carrots cut in 1 inch slices
  • 4
    potatoes, cut in 1 inch chunks
  • 1/2
    onion, quartered
  • 1 pkg
    frozen peas

How to Make Beef Stew


  1. Place 3 cups water in saucepan and heat to boiling. Drop in bouillon cubes to melt.
  2. Meanwhile, Heat vegetable oil over medium heat and brown stew meat.
  3. Place carrots, potatoes and onion in bottom of crockpot.
  4. Add browned stew meat on top of vegetables.
  5. Check bouillon cubes to see if they have dissolved. If not crush until all is dissolved.
  6. Add A-1, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, pepper and salt. Pour over stew meat in crockpot; add bay leaf. Cook for 8-10 hours.
