Panax ginseng contains active complex carbohydrates called ginsenosides, each with the capacity to stimulate or soothe the nervous system, balance metabolic processes, decrease blood sugar, improve muscle tone and stimulate the endocrine system. Research has shown that panax ginseng is effective in maintaining and restoring the cell's capacity to function - and therefore may be considered useful as an anti-aging treatment. It is an “adaptogen” supporting the body’s functions and increasing its resistance to physical, chemical and biological stress.

Star anise pods are responsible for the unique flavor of star anise and contain the chemical compound shikimic acid. Shikimic acid is used to make Tamiflu (oseltamivir), which is an important drug prescribed to treat influenza, bird flu and swine flu. Tamiflu does not actually kill the flu virus. However, if it is taken early it operates as a neuraminidase inhibitor that slows the internal spread of these viruses by stopping a protein that allows replicating viral particles from body cells to escape.
The shikimic acid in the seedpods of star anise may not directly operate as an antiviral, but the spice itself does. Star anise is a source of the compound linalool that is proven to have antiviral activity. Star anise also has the health benefits of an antioxidant, like many spices. Star anise stops the oxidation of certain fatty acids, which prevents cholesterol from being deposited and building up in the arteries. The phytonutrient limonene may prevent certain types of cancer and is also present in star anise.
