homemade sweet and sour mix (for cocktails)
Summer is almost here and I'm looking forward to some fun summery drinks. I'm not getting to the grocery store as often as I used to because of the Covid virus, so decided to try some homemade versions of sweet and sour mix. I tried 3-4 different recipes and although they all use the same ingredients, I found that there was a different taste with each one because they all used different proportions of the same 4 ingredients. I played around and came up with this one that I like the most. It's simple.....and cheap......makes a smaller amount, and you don't need to run to the store!

- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup fresh lime juice
- 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
How To Make homemade sweet and sour mix (for cocktails)
-
Step 1Make a simple syrup with the sugar and water. Simmer them together over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved.
-
Step 2Let the mixture come to room temperature.
-
Step 3Add the lemon and lime juices.
-
Step 4Pour into a container (I used a cleaned Prego jar).
-
Step 5Store in a covered container in the refrigerator for 2-3 weeks or freeze for about a month (or maybe longer. Mine was only frozen for about a month before I used it all).
-
Step 6NOTES: You can use bottled lemon and lime juices instead of fresh......but the taste is fresher and better with fresh.
-
Step 7VARIATION: Margarita mix usually leaves out the lemon juice for a lime based sour mix. So you can make this without the lemon juice as a substitute for margarita mix. Based on personal preference........you may want to add more lime juice to get a stronger flavor.
