Potato starch adds substantial thickness without changing the flavor of the cocoa. You could use cornstarch but the texture will be a bit different.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 2 teaspoons potato starch
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder, unsweetened
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 2 - strips orange peel, for garnish

How To Make italian hot chocolate

  • Step 1
    In a small dish, whisk together 1 tablespoon milk with potato starch. Set aside.
  • Step 2
    Combine cocoa powder and sugar in a small saucepan. Slowly whisk in remaining milk, set pan over low heat and bring mixture to a simmer.
  • Step 3
    Give the starch-milk mixture a quick stir and whisk into the saucepan. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, whisking continuously, until hot chocolate has thickened.
  • Step 4
    Divide between two small mugs and place a strip of orange zest on top of each.
