If you don't care for the taste of boxed banana pudding then this recipe is for you. It is the way my mother always made it. I love to eat it while it is still warm.

Blue Ribbon Recipe

There's nothing like homemade banana pudding and this recipe is super simple. The from-scratch vanilla pudding is smooth and creamy. When you layer the pudding between vanilla wafer cookies and sliced bananas, this classic Southern dessert is a fantastic treat. Test Kitchen Avatar The Test Kitchen

How to Make Sherry's Old-Fashioned Homemade Banana Pudding

Step-by-Step

  1. Place vanilla wafers on the bottom and along the sides of a large bowl or casserole dish.
  2. In a medium-sized saucepan, mix together the sugar, corn starch, salt, milk and egg. BEFORE turning on the burner stir all ingredients together making sure corn starch has dissolved. Corn starch will NOT dissolve in hot liquid.
  3. Heat on medium - medium-high heat stirring or whisking constantly until the pudding has thickened. Remove from heat, add butter and vanilla. Mix well.
  4. Slice bananas and spread over vanilla wafers. Pour pudding over bananas.
  5. For garnish, crumble a few vanilla wafers and sprinkle over pudding. Serve warm or cold.
