dutch carmel apple pie

My Grannie Miller used to make what she called Dutch apple pies that are made with brown sugar. I took this one step further and added carmels. The carmel flavor gets more pronounced as the pie cools. The only thing that makes it better is to add a scoop of home made vanilla bean ice cream like I have done here

Ingredients

  • - pastry for a 2 crust pie
  • 6 cups apples, peeled, cored, and sliced. two different kinds of apples will add good texture
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • pinch - salt
  • 4 tablespoons flour
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 20 - ccaramels, unwrapped, and melted in microwave

How To Make dutch carmel apple pie

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  • Step 2
    In a large bowl toss the apples with the lemon juice, then the flour.
  • Step 3
    In a small bowl mix the sugars, spices, and salt together.
  • Step 4
    Roll out a pie crust, and place ina 9 inch pie pan.
  • Step 5
    Mix tthe apples and spice mixture together and pour into prepared pie shell.
  • Step 6
    Melt caramels in microwave and drizzle over apples.
  • Step 7
    Dot butter over caramels.
  • Step 8
    Roll out second crust, place over pie.
  • Step 9
    Seal all arouund crust.
  • Step 10
    Make slits in center of crust.
  • Step 11
    Bake in a preheated 425 degree oven for 45 to 50 minutes or until golden
