chocolate shoo-fly pie

I have a funny story about this recipe. I won a blue ribbon at a county fair for this pie. When I took my husband that night to the fair to show him, the pie was missing from the table! They left the ribbon for me though :-)

Ingredients

  • 1 - unbaked 9 inch pie shell
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/3 cups boiling water
  • 1 1/2 cups chocolate syrup
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/3 cups flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/3 cup butter or margarine

How To Make chocolate shoo-fly pie

  • Step 1
    Dissolve 1/4 teaspoon baking soda in boiling water. Stir in chocolate syrup. Set aside. Combine flour, sugar, 1/4 teaspoon baking soda and salt. Cut in butter or margarine with pastry blender to form coarse crumbs.
  • Step 2
    Set aside 1 cup each of chocolate syrup mixture and crumbs.
  • Step 3
    Gently combine remaining chocolate mixture and crumbs, stirring just until crumbs are moistened (mixture will be lumpy).
  • Step 4
    Pour reserved cup of chocolate mixture into unbaked pastry shell and spread chocolate-crumb mixture evenly over liquid in shell. Top with remaining cup crumbs.
  • Step 5
    Bake at 375 degrees for 60 minutes or until set.
