Vanilla is my favorite, I found a recipe online and gave it a try. WOW, what great tasting vanilla. UPDATE! When I first posted this recipe back in 2012 the cost of vanilla beans was approx $23.00 a pound now seven years later the cost is about $200.00 for a half pound 4oz is $98.00 on Amazon and that is the cheapest I have seen them. Longing for the good ole days.

How to Make Homemade Vanilla

Step-by-Step

  1. with a the tip of a sharp knife split each bean but leaving the ends intact so they are not separated
  2. Place the beans in 1/2 gallon of vodka. I used the bottle the vodka came in but you can use any container. seal the bottle.
  3. set in a cool dark area and give it a light shake everyday. The vanilla will be ready in 3 months for single strength and 6 months for double strength I am doing the double strength so it will be ready to use or give as gifts for the holidays.
