Vanilla is my favorite, I found a recipe on line and gave it a try. WOW what a great tasting vanilla and economical.I bought my vanilla beans from Amazon the cost was 1/2 pound ( approx 54 vanilla beans) for $23.00 and a 1/2 gallon of vodka was $12.00. I used the vodka bottle for my container, I did have to pour off less then 1/4 cup as I added more beans it would rise to the top. The pack of beans I ordered had about 80 beans in it, but was still 1/2 pound. I believe the seller was Olivenation. They smelled wonderful and were soft.

How to Make Homemade Vanilla, $35.00 for 1/2 gallon

Step-by-Step

  1. with a the tip of a sharp knife split each bean but leaving the ends intact so they are not separated
  2. Place the beans in 1/2 gallon of vodka. I used the bottle the vodka came in but you can use any container. seal the bottle.
  3. set in a cool dark area and give it a light shake everyday. The vanilla will be ready in 3 months for single strength and 6 months for double strength I am doing the double strength so it will be ready to use or give as gifts for the holidays.
