cream cheese and honey turnovers

This is my take on the very traditional Puerto Rican "quesitos." They remind me of my island and my childhood. I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do.

Oh yum! As you bite into the puff pastry, there's a lovely crunch from the buttery, flaky crust. The honey-vanilla cream cheese filling is smooth and creamy. It has a nice tang from the cream cheese, but the honey adds a hint of sweetness. The sprinkled sugar on top adds to the sweetness. These are simple yet delicious.

Ingredients

  • 1 package puff pastry sheet, thawed
  • 1 package cream cheese (room temp), 8 oz
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 - egg (beaten for egg wash)
  • - white sugar (for dusting)

How To Make cream cheese and honey turnovers

  • Oven preheating and greased cookie sheets.
    Step 1
    Preheat the oven at 350° and grease two cookie sheets. Put them aside.
  • Mixing honey and cream cheese in a bowl.
    Step 2
    Mix the room temp cream cheese, honey and vanilla extract. You can do it by hand with a wooden spoon or mix it in the electric mixer until everything is incorporated.
  • Cutting puff pastry into squares.
    Step 3
    Cut each puff pastry sheets in either 9 small squares or 6 big squares.
  • Placing cream cheese mixture onto puff pastry and folding.
    Step 4
    Put 1 or 2 Tbsp of the filling per square of puff pastry. To close them, in a diamond like position take each corner and put them one on top the other and press to secure.
  • Brushing puff pastry with egg whites.
    Step 5
    Now put all turnovers on the pre-greased cookie sheets. Beat the egg and brush each turnover well. This is going to seal each turnover. You can sprinkle sugar on top before or after bake.
  • Baking puff pastry in the oven.
    Step 6
    Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden.
