These are nice to have around over the Holidays, they last a long time..they aren't hard to make either. I can't remember where I found this recipe, but I am so glad I did. I made it a tradition to make these every Christmas, and my kids love to help.

prep time 30 Min
cook time 25 Min
method ---
yield depends what length you cut them

Ingredients

  • SYRUP
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 3 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • - pinch of ground cloves
  • FILLING
  • 1 pound ground walnuts - a food processor works well for this
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 - egg whites
  • PHYLLO
  • 1 pound phyllo dough
  • 1 cup melted butter
  • - powdered sugar, for dusting

How To Make baklava roll-ups

  • Step 1
Simmer all syrup ingredients in a small saucepan for 15 minutes and cool. Beat egg whites till they have soft peaks and mix in filling ingredients and half of the prepared syrup.
  • Step 2
Cut phyllo sheets in half. Brush butter between each layer of dough. Take a stack of 8 layers of dough and spread filling on it, then roll up. Slice the roll to desired lengths and make a few tiny slits on the tops of the rolls
  • Step 3
Brush them with remaining butter and bake at 350F for 25 minutes. I bake these on a jelly roll sheet pan. Pour the rest of the syrup over the rolls once they are out of the oven. After they cool, dust with powder sugar.
