Aunt Susie's Gooey Butter Cake

My family is from St. Louis and family members have been making this recipe for years. I think my Aunt originally got it from my Grandmother Stuber or her sister Aunt Emo; Aunt Emo has long since passed but Grandmother turned 102 in January. My Aunt passed this down to me when I asked for some of the family recipes.
This is very rich and sweet you don't need a big piece, but it's easy to put together and is great at potlucks.

  • 1 pkg
    yellow cake mix
  • 1 stick
    real butter, melted
  • 3
  • 8 oz
    cream cheese
  • 1 box
    powdered sugar, or 3 1/2 cups

How to Make Aunt Susie's Gooey Butter Cake


  1. Mix cake mix, real butter, and one egg and press in bottom of 9x13in. metal pan.
  2. Mix 2 eggs, cream cheese and powdered sugar and pour over first part.
  3. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.
