My son loves homemade applesauce & I make it almost every week. I usually make it on top of the stove, but today I decided to do something different, and it ended up being my favorite. The Delicious apples are sweet enough that you do not need any added sugar in this recipe!

Ingredients

  • 6 large red delicious apples (i only had 5 because my husky decided to eat one of the apples!)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 - cinnamon stick
  • 1-2 slice lemon zest
  • 1 slice orange peel
  • pinch salt (optional)

How To Make mertzie's crockpot sweet applesauce -- no sugar

  • Step 1
I HATE peeling apples. Usually, I peel them first, but today I didn't, and we really loved the flavor of them cooked. (Almost like a black cherry). Cut the apples in cubes, either peeled or not. Discard the core & excess.
  • Step 2
Place in crockpot w/ water & other ingredients. Cook on high about 3 hours. I open the crock every so often & mash the apples w/ a potato masher.
  • Step 3
When the apples are all softened & easily mashable, drain any excess liquid you may not want. Remove the orange peel & cinnamon stick. Mash them & discard any large chunks of peel, if you kept the peel on or process it in a blender/food processor. We like our applesauce on the chunkier side, so I just use my potato masher to get them to consistency.
  • Step 4
    Enjoy!
