cherry dumplings

I can't remember where I got this - probably on an internet search when we had ripe cherries and I wanted to make something other than cherry pie. I've also made this in the dead of winter using a bag of mixed berries. I added the almond extract and cinnamon to the original recipe.

Ingredients
- 2 cups sour cherries
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons butter
- DUMPLING DOUGH INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- pinch - salt (a pinch is about 1/8 tsp.)
- 3 tablespoons crisco
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup milk
How To Make cherry dumplings

Step 1Mix the cherries, sugar, cinnamon and almond extract in a deep pot that has a lid. Bring the mixture to a simmer over med heat.

Step 2In a large bowl whisk together the flour, baking soda and salt. Cut in 3 tablespoons Crisco until the mixture is crumbly

Step 3Beat together the egg, vanilla extract and milk. Stir GENTLY into the dry ingredients just until incorporated.

Step 4Drop the dough by a spoon onto the bubbling cherry mixture. Cook 10 minutes without the lid. Cover the pan and cook 10 minutes more.
