I can't remember where I got this - probably on an internet search when we had ripe cherries and I wanted to make something other than cherry pie. I've also made this in the dead of winter using a bag of mixed berries. I added the almond extract and cinnamon to the original recipe.

Ingredients

  • 2 c
    sour cherries
  • 3/4 c
    sugar
  • 1/2 tsp
    almond extract
  • 1/2 tsp
    ground cinnamon
  • 2 Tbsp
    butter
  • DUMPLING DOUGH INGREDIENTS

  • 1 c
    flour
  • 2 tsp
    baking powder
  • pinch
    salt (a pinch is about 1/8 tsp.)
  • 3 Tbsp
    crisco
  • 1 large
    egg
  • 1 tsp
    pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 c
    milk

How to Make Cherry Dumplings

Step-by-Step

  1. Mix the cherries, sugar, cinnamon and almond extract in a deep pot that has a lid. Bring the mixture to a simmer over med heat.
  2. In a large bowl whisk together the flour, baking soda and salt. Cut in 3 tablespoons Crisco until the mixture is crumbly
  3. Beat together the egg, vanilla extract and milk. Stir GENTLY into the dry ingredients just until incorporated.
  4. Drop the dough by a spoon onto the bubbling cherry mixture. Cook 10 minutes without the lid. Cover the pan and cook 10 minutes more.
