A delicious apple dessert sprinkled with cinnamon sugar - from my old recipe files

Ingredients

  • - 8 thin slices day old bread
  • - 4 tablespoons butter
  • - 6 cups sliced apples
  • - 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • - 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • - 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • - 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • - 2 tablespoons light molasses
  • - 1/2 cup water
  • CINNAMON SUGAR
  • - 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • - 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

How To Make old fashioned apple dowdy

  • Step 1
    Trim crusts from bread slices; butter each slice .
  • Step 2
    Line 1-1/2 quart baking dish with bread, cutting to fit. Save enough bread for the top.
  • Step 3
    Fill dish with apple slices
  • Step 4
    Combine nutmeg, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, salt, brown sugar, molasses and water, pour over apples.
  • Step 5
    Top with remaining bread slices, buttered side up.
  • Step 6
    Cover, bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Remove cover - combined the 2 Tablespoons white sugar and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Sprinkle over top
  • Step 7
    Bake for 20 more minute uncovered or until golden brown. Serve hot with whipped cream.
