Ingredients

  • COOKIE DOUGH
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 - egg
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • - colored sugars or sprinkles
  • BUTTER CREAM ICING
  • 1 cup butter, cold
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • - food coloring of choice
  • Splash - milk

How To Make sugar cookies

  • Step 1
    Measure out flour, baking powder and nutmeg in a small bowl
  • Step 2
    In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter and sugar
  • Step 3
    Beat egg in small bowl
  • Step 4
    Add orange juice and vanilla to egg and mix gently
  • Step 5
    Add egg mixture and dry ingredients to butter and sugar mixture alternately
  • Step 6
    Divide dough into thirds and refrigerate 2-3 hours
  • Step 7
    Heat oven to 350 degrees
  • Step 8
    Roll out dough (1/4" think) on a floured board, cut into desired shapes, then place on an ungreased cookie sheet one inch apart
  • Step 9
    Sprinkle with colored sugars or bake plain to be frosted when cool
  • Step 10
    Bake 9 minutes till edges are light brown
  • Step 11
    While cookies are baking prepare buttercream icing
  • Step 12
    Cream butter till smooth using electric mixer. Gradually add powdered sugar. Add flavorings and food coloring if desired. If icing is still too thick to frost add a splash of milk
  • Step 13
    Frost cooled cookies and decorate as desired
