Ingredients

4 cwhite sugar
-
4 craisins
-
1 cshortening
-
1 1/2 tspcinnamon

1 tspcloves
-
1 1/2 tspnutmeg
-
1/2 tspginger
-
1 1/2 tspallspice, ground
-
1 tspsalt
-
6 cflour
-
2 tspbaking soda
-
1 ccherries cut in half
-
1 cnuts chopped ( pecans or walnuts )
How to Make World War 1 Cake
- in the evening,mix first 9 ingredients in large pot
- bring 4 cups water to boiling point. pour hot water over mixture and boil for 5 min.
- let stand overnight to cool
- next morning preheat oven to 325 degrees
- sift together TWICE the flour and baking soda,stir into cold mixture, add nuts and cherries
- pour into 4 loaf pans and bake 1 1/2 hours. cool completely,then wrap in tinfoil
- NOTE: I use green and red cherries. walnuts or pecans
