This recipe was used for over 50 years by a German friend. Got lucky enough to have it passed to me.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 - eggs
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda (mixed with buttermilk)
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

How To Make hot water devils food cake

  • Step 1
    Cream together shortening, cocoa, sugar and eggs.
  • Step 2
    add flour, salt, buttermilk with soda, and baking powder. Mix well; then add 1 cup hot water and 1 teaspoon vanilla. This is a soft batter. Bake in two 8 inch layers pays well greased and floured or in a sheet cake. Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes. Frost with your favorite frosting.
