Homemade German Chocolate cake is the best especially with homemade icing still warm from the stove top yummy.

  • 2 c
    sugar, granulated
  • 1 c
    vegetable shortening
  • 2 1/2 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 pkg
    bakers german sweet chocolate squares
  • 1 c
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla extract
  • 3 large
    egg whites

How to Make German Chocolate Cake


  1. Preheat oven to 350
  2. Cream sugar and shortening together
  3. mix dry ingredients together and then add to creamed mixture
  4. Melt chocolate in 1/2 cup of boiling water and then add to cake
  5. Add buttermilk and vanilla
  6. Now lastly add 3 beaten egg whites
  7. pour into 2, 9 inch greased and floured cake pans and bake 30 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Do not over bake.
  8. Then ice with homemade boiled icing with coconut and chopped pecans
