Easy German Chocolate Cake

1 german chocolate cake mix
1 cup milk
4 eggs
1/ 2 cup oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract


1 1/3 cups evaporated milk
1 1/3 cups sugar
4 egg yolks
2/3 cup butter
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 1/3 cups flaked coconut
1 1/3 cups chopped pecans, toasted


1Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour (or spray with Baker's Joy) 2 (9") round cake pans. In mixing bowl, combine cake mix, milk, eggs, oil and vanilla. With electric mixer on low speed, beat ingredients for 30 seconds. Continue beating on medium speed for another 2 minutes. Pour batter into prepared pans. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans for 5 minutes. Invert onto cooling rack and cool completely.
In saucepan, beat egg yolks. Add evaporated milk, sugar and butter. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture thickens about 10-12 minutes. Remove from heat. Add vanilla, coconut and nuts. Spread frosting between layers, on top and sides of cake. Do not cover cake until it is completely cooled. Store in refrigerator.
3Note: To bake oblong cake, grease and flour (or spray with Baker's Joy) a 13x9" cake pan. Proceed with recipe. Bake for 30-38 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
