This is a basic vanilla buttercream icing that I have been using for over 35 plus years. It is the base for all different flavored icings that I use on various baking goods.

Ingredients

  • - ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • - ½ cup crisco
  • - ¼ cup whole milk
  • - 4 cups powdered sugar
  • - 1 teaspoon vanilla

How To Make buttercream icing

  • Step 1
In a mixing bowl, with mixer on medium speed, cream the softened butter and Crisco until well blended.
  • Step 2
Add the powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk. Beat mixture until light and fluffy; about 2-3 minutes. If icing appears a little too thick, add just a tad more milk; one teaspoon at a time. You do not want it too soft. You want a medium consistency.
  • Step 3
Chocolate Buttercream Icing: add 2 Tablespoons of Cocoa with the powdered sugar.
