applesauce cake
I thought this was my grandma's recipe but it is actually her mother's, which would make it my great grandma's recipe! A very hardy, moist cake which really needs no frosting.

Ingredients
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 cup shortening
- 2 cups hot applesauce
- 3 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 4 teaspoons cocoa powder
- 1 cup chopped raisins
- 2/3 cup chopped nuts
- 3 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
How To Make applesauce cake

Step 1Dissolve baking soda and cocoa in enough hot water (a couple of tablespoons or so) to make a thick paste.

Step 2Cream together sugar, shortening, applesauce, and baking soda/cocoa mixture.

Step 3In a separate bowl, sift together flour, cinnamon and cloves.

Step 4Combine creamed mixture and dry mixture with a wooden spoon; stir in raisins and nuts.

Step 5Grease and flour two 9 inch square cake pans and place half of the cake batter in each pan.

Step 6Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour or until toothpick inserted into middle of cake comes out clean.
