I thought this was my grandma's recipe but it is actually her mother's, which would make it my great grandma's recipe! A very hardy, moist cake which really needs no frosting.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups hot applesauce
  • 3 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 4 teaspoons cocoa powder
  • 1 cup chopped raisins
  • 2/3 cup chopped nuts
  • 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

How To Make applesauce cake

  • Step 1
    Dissolve baking soda and cocoa in enough hot water (a couple of tablespoons or so) to make a thick paste.
  • Step 2
    Cream together sugar, shortening, applesauce, and baking soda/cocoa mixture.
  • Step 3
    In a separate bowl, sift together flour, cinnamon and cloves.
  • Step 4
    Combine creamed mixture and dry mixture with a wooden spoon; stir in raisins and nuts.
  • Step 5
    Grease and flour two 9 inch square cake pans and place half of the cake batter in each pan.
  • Step 6
    Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour or until toothpick inserted into middle of cake comes out clean.
