I thought this was my grandma's recipe but it is actually her mother's, which would make it my great grandma's recipe! A very hardy, moist cake which really needs no frosting.

Ingredients

  • 2 c
    sugar
  • 1 c
    shortening
  • 2 c
    hot applesauce
  • 3 1/2 tsp
    baking soda
  • 4 tsp
    cocoa powder
  • 1 c
    chopped raisins
  • 2/3 c
    chopped nuts
  • 3 1/2 c
    flour
  • 1 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp
    ground cloves

How to Make Applesauce Cake

Step-by-Step

  1. Dissolve baking soda and cocoa in enough hot water (a couple of tablespoons or so) to make a thick paste.
  2. Cream together sugar, shortening, applesauce, and baking soda/cocoa mixture.
  3. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, cinnamon and cloves.
  4. Combine creamed mixture and dry mixture with a wooden spoon; stir in raisins and nuts.
  5. Grease and flour two 9 inch square cake pans and place half of the cake batter in each pan.
  6. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour or until toothpick inserted into middle of cake comes out clean.
