A wonderful whole wheat oatmeal chocolate chip cookie. They're thin and chewy, peppered with chocolate chips. A wonderful combination of flavors. It's an old-fashioned recipe, anytime you want to bake a batch of cookies. We made these as directed, but the margarine can be substituted with butter if desired.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup margarine softened
  • 1/2 cup applesauce, unsweetened
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 cups quick-cooking oats
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts, optional
