My friend Mary, from Wisconsin, used to work at the cookie shop in the mall during the school year for spending money. They made batches of dough that would make your head spin...this is her version of the sugar cookie recipe. Fair warning, it makes A LOT!!! I make them, separate and freeze part to eat later. I also like to use the cinnamon sugar mix to roll in, because it tastes like snickerdoodles that way. Can also roll in colored sugar for the holidays if you want...

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 sticks butter
  • 4 medium eggs
  • 5 cups flour
  • 4 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 4 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • - cinnamon and sugar to sprinkle on top, optional
  • - colored sugar crystals for the upcoming holiday you bake them for, optional

How To Make sugar cookies, mrs. field's, my way

  • Step 1
    In large bowl, cream sugars, shortening and butter. Add eggs, mix well.
  • Step 2
    Combine flour, tartar, soda and salt in another bowl. Gradually add to sugar mixture, beating after each addition. Stir in vanilla. Roll into 1" balls. Dip balls in sugar, place on ungreased cookie sheets and bake 10 min at 350 degrees. Cookies have little cracks on top. They can be frozen.
