I recieved this recipe from my Jr. High Home Ec. Teacher many years ago. It has always been one of my favorite recipes for Christmas cookies and I still make them every Christmas.
If you like fruit cake you will love these fruit bars.

cookie base:
1/2 c
butter, softened
1 c
brown sugar, packed
1
egg yolk
1 tsp
vanilla
1 3/4 c
flour, sifted
1/4 tsp
baking soda
1/4 tsp
salt
cookie topping:
1
egg white
2 Tbsp
sugar
1/4 tsp
nutmeg
1/8 tsp
ground cloves
1/2 tsp
cinnamon
1/2 c
diced, mixed candied fruit
1 c
coarsely chopped walnuts

How to Make Spicy Topped Fruit and Walnut Bars

Step-by-Step

  • 1COOKIE BASE: In mixing bowl cream butter and brown sugar until fluffy. Beat in egg yolk and vanilla. Sift together flour, salt and soda. Gradually add to butter mixture, blending well.
  • 2Place dough on ungreased 15 1/2 x 12 inch cookie sheet. Cover dough with waxed paper and roll into 10 x 12 inch rectangle (abt. 3/8 inch thick). Remove waxed paper and set cookie sheet aside.
  • 3COOKIE TOPPING: In another bowl, add egg white, sugar, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, candied fruit and walnuts; blend well. Spread topping evenly over cookie dough. Bake at 350 degrees F. about 20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on cookie sheet. Cut into 1 x 2 inch bars. Makes about 48.
