This is my mom's recipe. She is known in her church for making these for bake sales.

Blue Ribbon Recipe

With a light molasses flavor, these old-fashioned cookies are an absolute dream to eat. They have the flavor and spices of a molasses cookie, like ground ginger, cinnamon and clove, with walnuts and raisins mixed in. When baked, they're slightly crisp on the outside and chewy inside. Ingredients

  • 3/4 c
    Crisco shortening
  • 3/4 c
    granulated sugar
  • 3/4 c
    light brown sugar
  • 2 large
    eggs, beaten
  • 3 c
    all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 tsp
    cinnamon, ground
  • 1 tsp
    ground clove
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1/2 tsp
    ground ginger
  • 1/4 c
    dark molasses
  • 1/8 c
    cold black coffee
  • 1 c
    raisins
  • 1 c
    walnuts, chopped
  • 1
    egg white
  • 1 Tbsp
    water

How to Make Mom's Hermits

Step-by-Step

  1. Preheat oven to 375 F. In a medium bowl, cream together the Crisco, white sugar, and light brown sugar. Add beaten eggs and set aside.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix together dry ingredients. 
  3. Add dry mixture to creamed mixture and mix well.
  4. Mix in coffee and molasses.
  5. Stir in raisins and nuts.
  6. Use a small ice cream scoop to make cookies or drop by tablespoons on greased cookie sheet.
  7. Mix 1 egg white with 1 tablespoon of water. Brush top of cookies with eggwash.
  8. Bake for 10-15 minutes.
