If you are of "a certain age", you'll remember these cookies waiting for you after school in the '70's. Bring back some childhood memories by pouring a glass of cold milk and enjoying these today.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup shortening (can use butter, but they will flatten more)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 cups m & m's (reserve 1/2 cup for decorating)

How To Make m & m cookie recipe (original '70's version)

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease baking sheets or use parchment paper.
  • Step 2
    In medium bowl, whisk together flour, salt and baking soda.
  • Step 3
    In large bowl, beat shortening (or butter), and sugars with electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla until creamy.
  • Step 4
    Stir in flour mixture until just blended. By hand, stir in 1 1/2 cups M & M's. Drop by rounded tsp. onto cookie sheet. Press several additional M & M's onto the tops of cookies.
  • Step 5
    Bake for 9-12 minutes until golden or until cookies are just set in center.
