My grandmother had the biggest sweet tooth I've ever seen. She always had at least three different kinds of sweets/baked goods on the counter at one time. She loved these cookies and made them, I think, mostly for herself, all the time. My sister loved cherries and couldn't get enough. Enjoy~

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1/3 cup chopped maraschino cherries
  • 2 1/2 cups corn flakes, slightly crushed
  • 1 cup maraschino cherries, quartered, you may need more to top each cookie

How To Make gramma's cherry winks

  • Step 1
    Pre-heat oven at 375. Sift Flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Set aside. Cream together shortening and sugar together until creamy, blend in eggs, one at a time, add milk and vanilla, mix until blended, a minute or two.
  • Step 2
    Blend in sifted ingredients, a quarter at a time and mix well. Add in pecans, dates, and chopped maraschino cherries and mix well.
  • Step 3
    Shape dough into balls using a level tablespoon. Roll each ball of dough in the corn flakes. Place on greased baking sheet. Top each cookie with a quarter maraschino cherry. Bake in oven 10-12 minutes. Enjoy~ *NOTE* DO NOT STACK OR STORE COOKIES UNTIL COLD.
