easy sugar cookies dressed up!

These cookies are large and pretty... best of all very easy! We do these in many colors for different holidays and for snacks while watching our favorite sports teams! We also make these for all of the holidays... For Easter we use pastel sugars. The possibilities are endless.... My grand children like helping to make these... and like eating them too! Play with your food!

Ingredients

  • COOKIES
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 5 5/8 cups all purpose flour
  • 3 1/4 cups sugar
  • 2 cups butter (softened)
  • 2 large eggs (well beaten)
  • 1 tablespoon clear lemon extract
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • MOM'S ROYAL ICING (MAKES ABOUT 3 CUPS)
  • 3 tablespoons meringue powder
  • 4 cups (about 1 pound) powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon clear lemon extract
  • 5 tablespoons warm water
  • SUGAR COATING
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • - red food coloring paste (to desired color)
  • - (can use other colors if desired)

How To Make easy sugar cookies dressed up!

  • Step 1
    SUGAR COATING: Stir together the sugar and food coloring (use a couple drops of water as needed to blend together the colors) Spread sugar on baking sheets to dry.
  • Step 2
    Put the dried sugar into a bowl for using. Put the remaining sugars into jars for storing for future use.
  • Step 3
    COOKIES: Mix together cookie dough ingredients in large bowl.
  • Step 4
    Roll out the cookie dough.
  • Step 5
    Use cookie cutters to make desired shapes of cookies.
  • Step 6
    Place cookies onto parchment lined baking sheets.
  • Step 7
    Bake at 375 degrees for about 12 to 15 minutes or until cookies are pale golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool.
  • Step 8
    Mom's Royal Icing: Mix all ingredients together in a sauce pan. Bring just to the boil.
  • Step 9
    While icing is still damp, either dip the cookies one side at a time, or the edges, or sprinkle the frosted cookies with sugars or sprinkles.
  • Pretty pink and red sugars sprinkled on wet white icing.
