This is an old recipe from Mrs. Johnson's recipes. She had quite a collection of good heirlooms.
These are easy to make as you roll them into balls and they spread as they cook.
The make a crisp crackly top that tastes great.

Ingredients

  • 3 c
    sugar
  • 1/2 c
    butter
  • 1/2 c
    shortening
  • 2 1/2 c
    flour
  • dash(es)
    salt
  • 3
    egg yolks
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 tsp
    cream of tartar
  • 1/2 tsp
    vanilla or lemon flavoring

How to Make Cracked Sugar Cookies

Step-by-Step

  1. Cream sugar, butter, and shortening. Add egg yolks and cream some more.
  2. Sift dry ingredients and add to creamed mixture. Then add flavoring.
  3. Roll into uniform small balls and place on ungreased cookie sheet.
  4. Bake 20 minutes at 300 degrees.
    Makes about 5 dozen cookies.
