One of my personal favorites. An old Amish neighbor, Rachel shared this recipe with me several years ago. She would always send us her bread and a batch of these cookies for Christmas. I begged her to please share the recipe and she obliged with a smile. I added the chocolate for something different. These can be topped with colored sprinkles, sprinkled with sugar or frosted. Enjoy!

How To Make ~ chocolate sugar cookies ~

  • Step 1
Preheat oven to 375 degree F. In a large mixing bowl, beat together the sugars, oil and butter - well. Add eggs and vanilla, mix until well incorporated. In another bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, cocoa, salt and cream of tartar. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the sugar mixture. beat only until incorporated. Line cookie sheet with parchment paper and drop cookies by heaping teaspoonfuls. You can shape them a little if you want as you go. Sometimes I sprinkle with sugar and sometimes I don't. Bake for 8 - 10 minutes. I always take mine out when the look a little under baked. Usually 10 minutes. As soon as they come from the oven I lightly press colored sprinkles into the cookie. If not wanting to use sprinkles, definitely sprinkle with sugar before baking unless are going to frost. Enjoy!
