Boiled Raisin Cookies

These are my oldest son Bruce's favorite cookie!
This is one of my most used recipes. Sometimes I substitute dates, craisins or chocolate pieces for the raisins.

This recipe really makes a big batch.

  • 2 c
  • 1 c
  • 2 c
  • 3/4 c
    shortening, crisco
  • 3/4 c
    butter, softened
  • 3
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla extract
  • 5-6 c
  • 1 c
    oatmeal, uncooked
  • 1/2 tsp
  • 1 tsp
    nutmeg or omit and use 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 tsp
  • 2 tsp
    baking soda in 1/4 cup hot water
  • 1 c

How to Make Boiled Raisin Cookies


  1. Boil raisins with water until almost all water is absorbed. Cool.
  2. Cream together sugar, crisco, and butter. Add eggs.
  3. Sift together flour, salt, nutmeg and cinnamon.
  4. Add to butter mixture and mix in remaining ingredients, including the raisins.
  5. Drop by teaspoon onto un-greased cookie sheet. Bake 10 minutes in a 350 degree oven. Let stand on cookie sheet 2 minutes, then remove to wire rack to cool.
