almond cookie cut outs
This recipe came from a newspaper many years ago to be made for Valentine's Day ~ they were heart shaped. The flavor of the almond is wonderful and they come out crisp on the outside !

Ingredients
- 4 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 2 cups shortening
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 - egg
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- BRUSH ON TOP:
- 1 - egg yolk beaten
- 1 tablespoon water
- 60 - shelled almonds
How To Make almond cookie cut outs

Step 1Pre heat oven 375 DF Sift flour with baking powder into large bowl. Add shortening, sugar almond and vanilla extracts, salt and beaten egg. Knead the mixture until thoroughly combined.

Step 2Turn dough onto an unfloured surface. Lightly pat into 1/4" thickness with a floured 2 1/2 " heart shaped (or any shape) cookie cutter, cut out cookies.

Step 3Place 2" apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Combine the egg yolk and 1 tablespoon of water. Brush on top and press one almond in center of each.

Step 4Bake 15 minutes or until golden brown around edges.
