My mother made this every year for the holidays. I always thought it was some exotic mystery thing, because she kept it wrapped in a damp towel on top of the fridge (I think the towel might have been saturated in whiskey but not sure). Anyway, we were not allowed to touch it; she only gave us a small piece now and then.

Ingredients
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 cup milk (mother used canned evaporated milk)
- 1 teaspoon butter
- 1 cup chopped dates
- 2 cups chopped pecans

Step 1Boil sugar and milk until the mixture forms a soft ball in water (or 236º on candy thermometer) Add dates and pecans and cook until a firm ball forms in water (or 240º on thermometer)

Step 2Remove from heat, add butter and let stand until lukewarm Beat with wooden spoon like fudge until mixture begins to thicken Pour onto a damp cloth and roll into a loaf (in damp cloth)

Step 3Place in refrigerator until cold and firm, then slice
