My mother made this every year for the holidays. I always thought it was some exotic mystery thing, because she kept it wrapped in a damp towel on top of the fridge (I think the towel might have been saturated in whiskey but not sure). Anyway, we were not allowed to touch it; she only gave us a small piece now and then.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup milk (mother used canned evaporated milk)
  • 1 teaspoon butter
  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 2 cups chopped pecans

How To Make mother's date loaf candy(sallye)

  • Step 1
    Boil sugar and milk until the mixture forms a soft ball in water (or 236º on candy thermometer) Add dates and pecans and cook until a firm ball forms in water (or 240º on thermometer)
  • Step 2
    Remove from heat, add butter and let stand until lukewarm Beat with wooden spoon like fudge until mixture begins to thicken Pour onto a damp cloth and roll into a loaf (in damp cloth)
  • Step 3
    Place in refrigerator until cold and firm, then slice
