I love caramels and my mom had the best recipe, but it is a little labor intensive. A friend from high school posted this recipe on Facebook before Christmas and I decided to make it. It isn't quite my mom's, but almost and it is much easier to make. I received compliments from friends to whom I gave candy plates. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 1/4 cups brown sugar
  • - dash salt
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

How To Make caramels

  • Step 1
Melt butter in heavy saucepan. Add sugar and salt; stir thoroughly. Stir in corn syrup; mix well. Gradually add milk, stirring constantly. Cook and stir over medium heat to firm ball stage (12-15 minutes). Remove from heat; stir in vanilla. Pour into buttered 9x9x2 pan. Cool and cut into squares.
  • Step 2
Just a couple of tips.. Start timing the 12-15 minutes when it starts to boil. The firm ball stage is when you drop a spoonful into cold water and you can form it into a ball that doesn't flatten out.
