yo ho ho apple cake
September 19th is International Talk Like a Pirate Day invented by my friend, Mark Summers (aka Cap'n Slappy) and another friend of his. I thought a little rum took this apple cake to the next level.Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum. Arrrrrrr!

Ingredients
- FOR THE CAKE
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1 tablespoon rum
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk or sour milk
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 3 to 4 cups peeled, cored and chopped apples
- FOR THE TOPPING
- 1/4 cup chilled butter
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup flour
- 1/4 cup oatmeal
How To Make yo ho ho apple cake

Step 1Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix sugars, butter, eggs, rum and vanilla together until well combined. Mix together the dry ingredients in a separate bowl

Step 2Starting with the dry ingredients add 1/3 of the dry ingredients and mix until blended with the sugar/butter mixture. Add 1/2 the buttermilk until mixed in and stop the blender and scrape the bowl. Add 1/3 of the dry ingredients and then the other 1/2 of the buttermilk and the last of dry ingredients blending well in between each addition. Add chopped apples and stir in by hand. Pour into a greased 9x13 pan.

Step 3For the topping, cut the butter into the sugar, flour and oatmeal with a pastry blender. Sprinkle on top of the cake batter. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Serve warm with whipping cream.
