I got this recipe out of a newspaper a very long time ago. It is a spicy type of cake that does not require any eggs. My assumption is during the war, eggs may have been rationed and a cook came up with this recipe to eliminate the use of eggs.
I have not made this cake in a number of years but after viewing the recipe again, I think I will be making it again shortly.
In medium pot, mix together brown sugar, 2 cups hot water and shortening. Add the raisins and salt, cinnamon and cloves. Boil for 5 minutes after mixture begins to bubble.
When this mixture is cold (and it must be cold), add three cups of flour and one tsp. of soda that has been dissolved in a couple of teaspoons of hot water. Mix well.
Pour into a greased tube pan and bake in preheated 350-375 degree oven for one hour.
