This is from a typewritten recipe from 1960s. It didn’t have instructions for frosting, but a cream cheese or buttercream frosting would be good, or just a dollop of whipped cream.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups cake flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon, ground
  • 1/2 teaspoon clove, ground
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice, ground
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk

How To Make spice cake

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350F.
  • Step 2
    Grease and flour an 8-inch square baking dish.
  • Step 3
    Sift together cake flour, baking soda, baking powder, cocoa, cinnamon, cloves, all spice, and nutmeg.
  • Step 4
    Cream together shortening and sugar. Add eggs one at a time.
  • Step 5
    Add dry ingredients and milk alternatively.
  • Step 6
    Bake for 25-30 minutes.
