I have had this recipe for a number of years, it's always fun to see the look on everyones face when thay find out the cake has saurekraut in it.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3 - eggs
  • 2 cups flour sifted
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 cup ( 8 oz can ) sauerkraut drained, rinsed, and chopped
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup water

How To Make sauerkraut surprise cake

  • Step 1
    In a large bowl cream butter, and sugar till light. beat in eggs one at a time, add vanilla.
  • Step 2
    sift together flour, baking powder, and baking soda,salt,and cocoa. add to cream mixture, and alternately with water, beating after each addition.stir in the sauerkraut.
  • Step 3
    pour into 9x13" baking pan, bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes. cool in pan then frost ( with sour cream chocolate frosting.)
  • Step 4
    SOUR CREAM CHOCOLATE FROSTING : melt one ( 6 oz ) package semisweet chocolate pieces and 4 tablespoons butter over low heat. remove, blend in 1/2 cup sour cream, 1 teaspoon salt. gradually add sifted confectionery"s sugar ( 2 1/2 - 2 3/4 cups) to make spreading consistency, beat well.
