I have had this recipe for a number of years, it's always fun to see the look on everyones face when thay find out the cake has saurekraut in it.

  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1/2 c
    cocoa powder
  • 1 c
    ( 8 oz can ) sauerkraut drained, rinsed, and chopped
  • 1 1/2 c
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp
  • 1 c

How to Make Sauerkraut Surprise Cake


  1. In a large bowl cream butter, and sugar till light. beat in eggs one at a time, add vanilla.
  2. sift together flour, baking powder, and baking soda,salt,and cocoa. add to cream mixture, and alternately with water, beating after each addition.stir in the sauerkraut.
  3. pour into 9x13" baking pan, bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes. cool in pan then frost ( with sour cream chocolate frosting.)
  4. SOUR CREAM CHOCOLATE FROSTING : melt one ( 6 oz ) package semisweet chocolate pieces and 4 tablespoons butter over low heat. remove, blend in 1/2 cup sour cream, 1 teaspoon salt. gradually add sifted confectionery"s sugar ( 2 1/2 - 2 3/4 cups) to make spreading consistency, beat well.
