This recipe is over 100 years old and my Mother-in-Law was making this when she was 8 and her mother before her. She went home to the Lord not long ago. Enjoy

Ingredients

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 - large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 4 cups flour

How To Make sugar cakes by rose

  • Step 1
    First section: Mix until creamy: shortening, sugar, eggs, vanilla and baking powder....set aside
  • Step 2
    Second: Mix seperately, buttermilk and baking soda
  • Step 3
    Third:Alternate buttermilk mixture with 4 cups of flour into the creamed mixture.
  • Step 4
    Set oven at 350. Drop by spoonfulls onto a greased cookie sheet... u can use tablespoon full if you want them larger. Put at least 2 inches apart. Sprinkle lightly with sugar BEFORE baking. 12 to 14 minutes....should be lightly browned.
