1/2 cbutter, softened

1/2 cshortening

2 csugar

4eggs

3 1/2 call purpose flour

2 tspbaking soda
-
1/2 tspsalt

1 1/2 cbuttermilk

2 tsppure vanilla extract

1 1/2 cground walnuts

FROSTING:
-
2 pkgcream cheese - 1 8 oz. and 1 3 oz., softened
-
3/4 cbutter, softened
-
5 - 5 1/2 cconfectioners' sugar
-
1 1/2 tsppure vanilla extract
-
1/3 cfinely chopped walnuts
How to Make Mrs. Turner's Christmas Walnut Cake
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream butter, shortening and sugar.
- Add eggs 1 at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Combine flour, baking soda and salt in another bowl.
- Add to the creamed mixture alternately with the buttermilk and vanilla. Beat on low speed just until combined.
- Stir in the ground walnuts.
- Pour into 3 greased and floured 9 inch round cake pans.
- Bake for 20 - 25 minutes until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
- Cool for 5 minutes, then remove from pans to a wire rack and cool completely.
- For frosting, beat cream cheese and butter in a mixing bowl. Add sugar; mix well. Add vanilla; beat until smooth. Spread between layers and over top and sides of cake. Sprinkle with walnuts.
Store in refrigerator.
